Accountant receives award for saying 'yes' to charity

Jackie Frost, partner at accountancy practice, Baker Chapman & Bussey, has won the ‘Everybody Counts’ award in the member in practice category for her involvement with YES, a charity that provides confidential counselling for young people between 11 and 25 years of age in Colchester.

The awards were presented by the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants at the Presidential Dinner to recognise and reward contributions made by members of the Institute who give their time freely to social and charitable causes.  The award means that YES will receive £2,000 as the charity to which Jackie has been donating her time.

Jackie’s first involvement with YES was in 2003 to help formulate a business plan.  The charity is financed by grants, the NHS and various charitable grant-making bodies, but it endeavours to raise some of its core funding from events.  Since 2003, Jackie’s involvement has grown, as she explains: “From temporarily to permanently filling the Treasurer’s role in 2005, Company Secretary in 2006 and a Director in 2007, I’ve been involved in recruitment of the new manager/fund raiser, a move to new premises, grant applications and documentation, plus I’m the watchdog who alerts YES to issues and provides guidance.  But my involvement hasn’t been purely one-sided; as well as the satisfaction of knowing that the charity is now settled in new premises and under enthusiastic management with a degree of financial stability, I have picked up new skills and my eyes have been opened to the growing problems in our society.”

The fully trained volunteer counsellors at YES provide free confidential counselling for problems such as depression, exam stress, family conflict, homelessness, drug addiction and pregnancy.  The charity operates from offices in Crouch Street, Colchester.

Baker Chapman & Bussey, the firm of accountants where Jackie is a partner, is delighted at her success.  Senior Partner, Vincent Jones, said: “Jackie gives a lot of her time and skill to charitable work, not only with YES but also with other organisations.  The fact that she has received this award is recognition of how much she contributes and I know she is thrilled that YES will also get boost of £2,000 for their funds.”
